Module 04
Virtuality to Physicality: 3D printing

Be kind to each other

Being kind to one another fosters a sense of community well-being, creating an environment where individuals feel valued, respected, and cared for. This, in turn, strengthens the social fabric, making the community more resilient to external pressures and challenges. Kindness acts as a unifying force, bridging gaps and healing divisions, whether they be cultural, social, or personal.

Moreover, this principle has a ripple effect; acts of kindness often inspire others to act in kind, creating a virtuous cycle that benefits the entire community. It's a principle that extends beyond the here and now, having long-term implications for community development, social justice, and even mental health.

Just as light illuminates dark spaces, acts of kindness can illuminate the darker aspects of human experience, bringing comfort, clarity, and hope where there is confusion, suffering, or despair. The principle of "Be Kind to each other" serves as a cornerstone for building a strong, resilient community where individuals feel valued and respected. In this context, a 3D printing exercise involving the collaborative design and creation of a light fixture can serve as a tangible manifestation of this ethical code.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to describe how electricity works.

Students will be able to describe different professions that use electricity.

Students will be able to develop 3D models to be printed in to light fixtures.

STEM Activities

Students will work on translating a virtual artifact into a tangible product using 3D printing. The students will be presented a problem to solve through a team-based exercise. In this exercise, students will create a light fixture model for the dorm room from Module 02 and 3D print their model. Students also learn about electricity and how electricity works in this module.
